For the next in our Floral Encyclopedia series – a visual guide to some of the more obscure plants and blooms – we were once again joined by the lovely Kristen Caissie of Moon Canyon. For this edition, she incorporated some of her lesser-known favorites into an arrangement with a decidedly tropical feel, perfect for a warm weather display. See below for all the details. XXJKE
Solomon Seal – A woodland perennial with native varieties in North America, Asia and Europe, this plant has stems of up to several feet in height that bear pale green, oval leaves and drooping clusters of creamy white flowers, followed by blue-black berries.
Monstera – A species of flowering plant native to tropical rain forests of Southern Mexico, South to Panama, it is sometimes referred to by such names as Fruit Salad Plant and Swiss Cheese Plant. Able to grow dozens of feet in the air, it bears large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves and fruit similar in taste to a pineapple.
Rhododendron – Most species in this genus of shrub bear dark green leaves with a glossy surface and dull underside, as well as large clusters of colorful flowers that bloom from spring to early summer.
Clarinervium Leaves – Native to Mexico, this plant is characterized by its extremely thick, beautifully decorated, heart-shaped leaves. A deep olive green hue, they feature silver, cream or white veins that give the overall effect of a turtle shell.
Caladium – Often known by the common name Elephant Ear or Angel Wings, Caladiums are tropical plants grown from tubers, often for their multi-colored foliage.
Maidenhair Fern – Soft and lacy evergreen plants, Maidenhair Fern are distinctive in appearance, with dark, often black stalks and leaf stems, and bright green, often delicately cut leaf tissue.
Calathea – Also commonly known as the Cathedral, Peacock or Zebra Plant, Calathea are characterized by beautiful foliage of bright white veins against green, red and cream leaves.
Anthurium – Native to tropical America, Anthurium are characterized by their brightly colored (often red) spathes and ornamental leaves, and boast a long vase life of about six weeks and even more depending on the variety and season.
Celosia – A small genus of edible and ornamental plants in the Amaranth family, Celosia produce showy flowers either of the plumed type, which produce striking upright spires, or the crested type, which have a twisted form.
Boston Fern – Common in humid forests and swamps, this variety of fern is characterized by frilly leaves and long hanging fronds.
