Stealing a quick family vacation or trip with friends to a warm locale is one of my favorite rituals around this time of year. It feels like a reward after the quiet, serene winter months, and is a great way to ramp up for the more social, warm-weather season to come. Packing for such a trip can be a challenge though, especially if you are going from one extreme climate to another. Putting on a swimsuit and sandals when you’ve been living in cashmere knits and boots can be a bit of an adjustment!
When it comes to this type of trip, I trend to keep it really simple with what I pack, focusing on low-key, season-spanning pieces and then adding in a few summery accessories to further lighten the mood. Cotton basics, classic denim, and an easy dress for dinner out are some of my essentials. Our striped silk button-down shirt is another favorite. It works under a jacket or sweater during your travels, then over your swimsuit while you’re sitting poolside, which I love. When it comes to swimsuits, I like Marysia Swim’s modern styles for any trip but especially during this time of year when you want something elegant and pared down.
For shoes, I always bring one great go-with-everything sandal and one sturdier mule or d’Orsay flat. Our deck shoe is one of those easy shoes you could wear around your hotel or vacation home as well as sightseeing in town. And I love Carrie Forbes’ raffia slides for an even more low-key look. Natural textures like raffia add such a stylish, effortless feel to wardrobe basics.
